Character test

The character test consists of three parts

1. Rattling, which involves a chain being dropped on a sheet of metal

2. Man in a blanket, which involves a person wrapped in a blanket jumping into the dog's path

3. Shot, which involves three shots being fired at regular intervals

The test begins with the judge checking the ID markings on the dog. Following that the dog and the dog handler go onto a track and the test commences. The rattling test can even make the dog handler jump! The dog may become very frightened but this is acceptable providing it can approach, examine and smell the source of the noise. This particular part of the test will be approved providing the dog does not continue to be frightened. In the next part of the test a person in a blanket jumps into the dog's path. The requirement here is the same as for the previous element, that is, the dog must make contact. Sometimes this takes place with a little encouragement from the handler. The final part of the test is the shooting. The dog must appear unconcerned by the shots and even be able to play or fight with his handler when a shot is fired. If the dog succeeds in doing this then this part of the test is approved. The Character Test is recognised as a utility qualification in exhibition and allows the dog to be entered in the Utility Class at dog shows.
